Journal #1: About Me
Hi, my name is Stella Guillen. I have two dogs. One named Milo and the other is named Lucky. I have one older brother name Michael. He graduated from Texas A&M and is currently living in Houston. I’m currently doing my last semester of my residency at Mission Valley Elementary. I am doing reading for resources inclusion class. So, I see first-fifth grade students. I’m just passed my SPED and PPR certification. I will also be graduating this December. When I found out that I will be taking this course I thought it will teach us about all the different types of technology that is used for education. I figure we learn like some new website that will also be helpful with our students to learn new concepts. Since technology is a big part of education now, I think it does play a major role in education. Since we do use it on a daily basis. I’m fortunate enough to have seen the introduction of technology in the classroom. I do think it has help me in finding other resources when I didn’t know how to solve a problem or when I need to find more information on a topic. It has also been a lot easier in uploading my assignments where I am. With technology I do think it does benefit my student since we do use multiple websites here at Mission Valley. We use Mobymax for sight words and Kids A-Z for foundations. Not to mention the use of I-station and Splash Learn. Everyday our students come in and do Mobymax sight word drill for 10 minutes. On Wednesday and Thursday, we do guided reading with them. So, depending on which group of students I read with first. They will read their book to me then get on Kids A-Z to listen to their story and take their quiz. Then I switch with the others. If they both finish, they will get on splash learn which does go over phonics instruction and has assigned lesson according to their levels. I-station is for my dual students, and they also get on Kids A-Z for their quiz. I have noticed a great impact with my students. With that I want to continue to use the websites since it has been proven to be successful with the range of students, I do see being a resource reading teacher.
Journal #2: Presentation Tool
I have all seen the importance of technology being integrated in the classroom. When I have my own classroom, I plan on using a wide variety of resources that my students can also have access to. When my student has a presentation for their science project, or any project. I will let them know that they can use a website called Canva instead of Microsoft PowerPoint to make a slide show presentation. I also want to allow my students to make their own learning portfolio. I think allow students to take part in their learning is very important. One way I can do that is allow them to choose their work. They feel is their very best to be shown as parent teacher or student lead conferences. Or every as an example for the next class or peers.
With how I plan on incorporating technology the standard I believe I am supporting is the ISTE teacher standard 2.6c Create learning opportunities that challenge students to use a design process and computational thinking to innovate and solve problems. Since the students are creating their own website the are using the design process to express themselves. They are also picking their own work to be show cases. They are in complete control on how they wish to be presented through their portfolio.
The skills that I believe is necessary for the students have to be able to conduct their work using presentation tools. They need to be able to Communicate clearly any being able to have effective communication, having media and digital fluency and being able to be effective and engaging. Another skill that I believe is necessary is being able to develop creativity. They need to be cable of create with their knowledge they have obtain and be able to grow on that knowledge.
The advantage of using a presentation tool is that they allow students to to customize their design of their presentation more than Microsoft PowerPoint. They also offer lots of free templates that you can use and customize. However that might cause lots of stress and may get student over whelmed with all the options. Not everyone might be willing to make a free account to get access to the website. Many of the websites also have a premium option that require you to pay for those services.

Journal #4 Mind Mapping
I can use the website Mindomo for when the students in my class are writing an essay. They need to generate some ideas and topics to write about. The can also use Mindomo for figuring the main ideas in a book they have read to help them answer questions about their story. This can also be used to help the students with comprehension.
The use of the website Mindomo helps me connect to the ISTE Standards for Students. The standard 1.3c Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions. Is represented since the students are using a digital resource to help make meaningful connections or conclusions to the story they read or what they want to write about.
The new skills an ability that are required for my students to be successful in using the Mindomo website is to be able to utilize connectivity. From the article The 6 C’s of Education for connectivity is when individuals connect with their environment around them. With the rapid increase of technology the way my students view their environment is constantly changing. They need to understand the connections that are personal regardless of how the technology may change for each student.
Using the website Mindomo allows for collaboration, cross-platform support, customization options. Mindomo is also a user-friendly platform that will be easy for students to navigate and to grow their mind map. The disadvantage of using this website is the pricing structure and the learning curve associated with the advance features. Which can lead to potential drawbacks for students. Since this resource is online you do need to be mindful of the privacy and security of your data. Which is an essential part of considering the use of this website.

Journal #5 Timeline
The students in my classroom can use the website called Sutori for creating timelines. Sutori is an online platform that allows users to create and engage with interactive, multimedia timelines. It will allow for classroom learning to enhance by providing a dynamic way to present and explore information. The student will be allowed to create and showcase historical events, the development of a particular topic, or the progression of a story. The website even allows for images, videos and other multimedia elements to make these timelines engaging and informative.
The connection I can make to the ISTE standards is the standards for teachers. The standard that is being addressed is 2.6.b Manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on maker spaces or in the field. Since the teacher is allowing the students to use a technology resource. To help them better understand and present their information on a timeline.
The skills from the 6’s of education that are required for my students to be successful is that they must be able to communicate clearly. This skill requires my students to be able to present information clearly. This also requires that the information to be presented in a multitude of means through a variety of media. It also needs to be effective and engaging to the audience.
The advantages of using a website like Sutori is that it allows the students to have visuals that can engaged the audience while presenting their information. There are also multimedia elements that can be incorporated in the presentation as well. The students are also able to build a portfolio showcasing their work overtime and this also allows for remote learning. The disadvantage is that some students might have technical issues. Depending on if the student has used similar websites and tools there may be a learning curve to use this website. Journal #6 Multimedia Interactive Poster
The students in my classroom will be able to use the website Canva or Smore to creat interactive media posters or even presentations when presenting concepts or topics. These website for allow them to engage the audience while they present information and will also encourage the learners to be motivated by taking some initiative in their own learning. The use of creating an interactive media poster will allow me to assess if the students understand the main idea of a concept that was learning in class.
The use of websites like Canva and Smore allows me to make a connection the ISTE Standards for teachers. Using these websites, I am able to address the standard 2.6.b Mange the use of technology and students learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on maker spaces or in the field. Since the students are using digital platforms to express their knowledge on a concept learned in class. Which also will allow me to assess if the understood what they learn to include important details in their presentation about their topics.
The skills that are required for my students to perform the following task is they need to master communication. According to the 6 Cs of Education, the students need to be able to communicate clearly since they will be presenting their information that they have learned. They will also need to be able to have digital and media fluency since they will be conducting their work online with media access. They need to be able to perform appropriately when having a media or digital presence. Since they are presenting, they need to be able to communicate with their peers and audience.
The advantage of using Canva or Smore is they both offer a wide range of templates, design elements, and customization options. It encourages the students to unleash their creativity and express themselves through visual content. Both websites have collaboration opportunities for the students to have a peer review. The disadvantage is that Canva is a user-friendly environment for the students unlike Smore. Having the free version versus the paid version may cause some obstacles for some students. With the customization options it may be overwhelming and may cause some students to be distracted with picking and choosing the option they like. There is also some limited online access to Canva. Which may be an issue for some students.

Journal #7 Word Clouds
I can use websites that make word clouds in my classroom to help students visualize important vocabulary covered in the content they are learning. This can help them identify key themes, topics, or keywords in a text. Which can help with summarizing or analyzing large amounts of information.
The connection to ISTE Standards I was able to make with the incorporation of word clouds. The connection made is to the ISTE Teacher Standards 2.3. B Establish learning culture that promotes curiosity and critical examination of online resources and fosters digital literacy and media fluency. Since the use of word clouds will assist them in their understanding while they get to creat their word clouds. Which will encourage them to continue on with their learning.
Since words could make the connection with digital literacy and media fluency. The skill for the 6C’s of education that the students need to be successful is think critically. Getting the students to think critically will allow them to manage information. This skill will allow multiple forms of media. The information needs to be filtered and analyzed, authenticated and processed. This skill allows for the ability to take information and put it to use to create solutions. Which will benefit them in the real world not just in the classroom.
As mentioned, before some of the advantages of using word clouds in the classroom is that it can help students visualize vocabulary. That they may see in the concept they are learning. Word clouds can also help with identifying key themes, topics, or keywords in a text. This can also be used to help summarize or analyzing large amounts of information. However, since the word clouds can highlight frequently occurring word. They don’t provide any context or depth in understanding. They are also designed to be visual representation and do not facilitate deeper text analysis. So, they may not be suitable for more complex textual analysis. Not all the words that are. Emphasized will be the most important since some less frequent words or phrases may carry a deeper meaning or significance to convey the main message.

Journal #8 Digital Storybook
I can use a website like My Story Book to help my students be engaged in learning while allowing for them to personalize their content. The use of this website can help them improve on their writing skills and boost their reading and communication skills. Using this online platform an helps the student become more comfortable and accustomed to using digital tools and technology for their academic needs.
The connections to ISTE Standards that I was able to make for students is 1.4.a design process. The students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems. This is show since the students have to come up their own ideas and designs for their story book. They also also have to come up with a topic that will be discussed in the book of their choosing.
The skill that is needed from the 6C’s of education is that they need to be able to work collaboratively. They students much me able to created and be able to communicate to their community. The students will need to be able to communicate to their audience about their story and need to be able to self assess their more while using digital platforms.

Journal #9 Thematic Unit
The thematic unit I decided to do was on sustainability for middle school students. More specifically I chose to do 7th grade since I felt it was a more sitting concept for middle school students. In my unit the main focus question I ask was how sustainably affects living things. In my lesson, the students will learn about sustainability in science, social studies, and in English language arts.
My experience developing this thematic unit was difficult. I did have some trouble figuring out what type of lesson I wanted to do. Depending on what I picked I had trouble coming up with assignments for students to use that involved the resources we have used in the class. This lesson will benefit learners by allowing them to make cross-curricular connections and deeper learning. Thematic lessons can make learning more meaningful, relevant, and engaging by being able to connect concepts to the real world issues.
The advantage of using a thematic unit is that it allows for integrations of various subjects which can make it more cohesive and meaningful. These units can help make learning more relevant by connecting it to student’s lives and interests. Thematic units also involve project-based learning which can foster critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork skills. However, there are some disadvantages. For example, these units can lead to a curriculum overload if not planned properly. Covering too many subjects within a theme can be overwhelming for students and teachers. These lesson are also time consuming. In some cases, thematic units may not allow for an in-depth coverage of individual subjects. Over-reliance on these lessons can limit the variety of teaching methods and approaches. Which may not suit all students learning styles. Assessing the students understanding can be challenges unlike traditional subject based instruction. Teaches need to develop appropriated assessment tools.

Journal #10 Webquest
Webquest can be incorporated in the classroom to help students thoroughly analyze information and make conclusions on any topic. They will also be able to demonstrate their understanding the content with a corresponding assignment and a reflection essay. Webquest promote collaboration amongst the students. They are also many tools that can be used as a Webquest. They can also easily be differentiated to support various students and can also correspond to the various levels of those students.
The ISTE Standard connection is for student. The standard 1.6.a students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication is present during the Webquest assignment. Since the students are allowed to pick their desired platform for them to conduct their assignments for their content.
The new skills and abilities that is need from the 21st Century Skills: 6C’s of Education is they need to utilize connectivity and communicate clearly. Utilized Connectivity will allow my students to get connected with the world around them with the use of technology. The other still that is needed is to be able to communicate clearly. This will allow them to have media and digital fluency that will be needed to present their information to their peers.
The advantage of using a Webquest is that they can be highly engaging for students since they use a variety of multimedia elements and interactive websites. The use of WebQuests also allow for the students to collaborate with one another. Which develops their teamwork, communication, and social skills. Webquest can also be adapted for different learning styles and abilities. Which allows the teachers to provide a variety of resources and tasks to accommodate diverse learners in the classroom. However, there ares some disadvantages of using WebQuest. WebQuests do require access to technology which may be a problem for some students if they don’t have access to a computer at home. Some of the designs may be time consuming and can be challenging to plan an activity. There is also less control for the content when relying on external websites. Which can disrupt the flow of the WebQuest and lead to teacher and student frustration.

Journal #11 Final Thoughts
Before I took this course, I didn’t know much about the resources that are out there for students to use in their classrooms. Another thing I was concerned about was that I didn’t want to just have my students on their Chromebooks all day. Since that defeats the purpose of having a teacher to give instruction, all I knew was that technology has significantly changed teaching in the classroom. Now I have realized that everything can truly be done with the use of technology. Technology also allows the teacher to meet the diverse needs of learners in their classroom. The most important thing, however, is to have the right balance between the use of technology and face-to-face instruction.
There is one question and challenge that I have regarding the use of technology in the classroom. How can I implement some of these websites that will cause difficulty with students with disabilities when they interact with the website? I did notice that some of these resources are going to be difficult for some of my special education students who are in the classroom. This type of disadvantage will affect their academic growth and learning if they cannot understand how to use the websites properly. Another challenge is to find a resource that fits the needs of the student learning and is something that all students can easily understand to use for their assignments.
My plan for continuing to learn about integrating technology in my teaching more effectively is to communicate to other teachers how they integrate technology. I know some workshops will even teach me how to use these resources that will benefit student learning in the classroom. I believe that getting students' input on the websites that they will be using for assignments. This a great opportunity for teachers to get students involved in their learning as well.
